Women running the London Marathon(ING) in 2012 responded to a survey by St. Mary’s University in the UK about their satisfaction with the tops they use for sports. According to the study, 75% of them have problems with this basic garment for runners.
The same research also found that one-third of marathoners suffer from breast pain. Of these, 17% reduced the amount of training due to the discomfort.
In all, 1,285 women participated in the study. Bruise marks and shoulder straps that tighten excessively are the main complaints. Another data analyzed by researchers(and already well-known among women) is that the bigger the breasts, the more problems runners have.
Because of the dynamics of the sport, the breasts move sideways and vertically each step, and can force their ligaments. In order to analyze this biomechanics and the consequences of the lack of adequate support during physical activity, the team of biomechanic specialist Joanna Scurr of the University of Portsmouth in England conducted a pioneering study involving one hundred Women, who walked or ran with sensors attached. Result: The oscillation of the breasts during the run can reach 21 cm, depending on the size of the breasts. It is not the movement itself that matters, but how fast it is.
The breasts move in three ways: in and out, up and down and from side to side, while the bras are designed to reduce only the vertical balance. When the woman walks, the movement is distributed in equal amounts(33% for each direction). Already during the race this scheme changes: 51% are up and down, 22% from one side to the other and 27% in and out. Analyzes have shown that the breasts make an”8″ drawing during movement. And, as you might imagine, the bigger the breasts, the bigger the balance.
If these movements are not reduced, the woman begins to feel pain and other nuisances – friction with the skin, tightness and heat – that hinder their performance and, in some cases, cause even more serious problems. Not to mention the risk of damaging the ligaments that support the breasts, called Cooper’s ligaments, which are very difficult to repair.
The balance overloads the musculoskeletal apparatus. This can lead to muscle and spinal pain by improper posture.
Another study, carried out in Brazil by the company Santaconstancia Tecelagem, in partnership with the New Medical Diagnostic and Compasso Medical Institute, investigated the impact of running on the breasts and how to combat possible negative effects. The work, carried out over four years, involved runners free of plastic surgeries in the region of the breasts.
Taking into consideration comfort and support, the test showed that the balance of the breasts, followed by friction, heat and myofascial pain(localized muscular pain) are the most undesired sensations by the athletes.
Runners need, above all, a top that offers comfort and safety.
With the opinion of the users themselves, and mainly based on studies, the consensus indicates that the”perfect” top must be well structured(if possible, with compression, which minimizes the balance of the breasts); Made with tissue that allows breathing and that does not cause friction with the skin, and with modeling in format of”X” or swimmer.
One should not choose the top for beauty or price. It is necessary that the piece fits well to the woman’s breasts and biotype and, consequently, has a good support capacity. The ideal model should provide firmness and do not hurt the skin. Thus, wide-breasted tops, especially if the breasts are bulky, should be preferred. Regattas that offer a reinforcement top can be a good option, since many women prefer to run with two tops and in this case, we have a similar result.
Before purchasing your top, watch as a preventive, some details of your own body:
- Identify areas of burning and chafing in the shoulder and chest.
- Know the size and volume of your breast and the correct numbering of the top to be used.
- Evaluate the fabric and its specifications(in the product description), including qualities at different temperatures and environments.
- Choose the top according to the sporting modality(walks, shorter or longer races etc).
…and do not fall for robbery
Both in stores and online shopping, some advice helps avoid bad acquisitions. Avoid the coarser and heavier fabrics, as well as the bulge models, which create obstacles to perspiration and generate more heat during exercise. If you can, watch the touch of the fabric. It should be pleasant and have good breathing in direct contact with the sensitive skin of the breasts. Also check that the fabric is supported with compression, but do not over tighten. Escape modeling with thin straps. Prefer model swimmer or”X”(on the back) and with wide straps, because they give more support to the breasts, attenuating possible pains after the practice of the race. Pass away from any element that may bother you by friction during exercise, such as sewn labels, among others.
